Essential Oil Dilution: Clear and Simple Calculation

Updated: Apr 11, 2020

We get asked this question so often, and yet we still see (a lot of) confusion 😅

So, how are Essential Oils diluted? The many variations of this questions are:

How to dilute Essential Oils?

How many drops of Essential Oils to add to Carrier Oils?

How much Carrier Oil to use?

How to calculate Essential Oil drops?

How much Essential Oil should I add to Carrier Oils?

We are not addressing how much Essential Oils should be diluted for application or Essential Oil Safety Guidelines here. Here, we are only going to unravel the "mysteries" of How to calculate Essential Oil Dilution Percentages and Drops - and you will find that Essential Oil Dilution is is actually rather simple!

So, here we go. All you have to remember is one simple equation:

Essential Oil 1% Dilution in 10ML Carrier Oil = 3 Drops

Essential Oil 2% Dilution in 10ML Carrier Oil = 6 Drops

Essential Oil 3% Dilution in 10ML Carrier Oil = 9 Drops

What's the Math?

Ok, what if you have 15ML or 30ML or 60ML bottles of Carrier Oil you would like to add Essential Oil to then?

Use this Formula, and just change the Capacity:

1% DILUTION = (Capacity of Bottle / 10) x 3 Drops = Number of Essential Oil Drops

Example 1A: 15ML Carrier Oil

Essential Oil 1% Dilution in a 15ML Bottle of Carrier Oil

= (15/10) x 3 Drops

= 4.5 Drops of Essential Oil

Example 2A: 60ML Carrier Oil

Essential Oil 1% Dilution in a 60ML Bottle of Carrier Oil

= (60/10) x 3 Drops

= 18 Drops of Essential Oil

3% DILUTION = (Capacity of Bottle / 10) x 9 Drops

Example 1B:

Essential Oil 3% Dilution in a 15ML Bottle of Carrier Oil

= (15/10) x 9 Drops

= 13.5 Drops of Essential Oil

Example 2B:

Essential Oil 3% Dilution in a 60ML Bottle of Carrier Oil

= (60/10) x 9 Drops

= 45 Drops of Essential Oil

And there you have it. Still don't get it?
